How Does Your Mouth Repair While You Sleep

Posted on 5/10/2021 by Advanced Dental Specialty Group
How Does Your Mouth Repair While You SleepDuring the day, you have the time to improve your oral health by brushing, flossing, and eating healthy diets. However, once you go to bed, you won't have control over what happens in your mouth. During this time, your mouth repairs itself because the conditions are favorable.

How Repairs are Done

When sleeping, your mouth is dormant, and barely much is going on. However, this is not the case among people with grinding problems. In fact, instead of repairing itself, it damages it further. This is because teeth grinding wears down the tooth enamel and exposes the underlying dentin. As a result, you could experience tooth sensitivity and dental cavities. Your teeth could also be stained to the exposed yellowish dentin.

If you don't have teeth grinding problems or any other oral conditions, your mouth is more likely to repair itself while you sleep. This is mostly done by reducing the acidic conditions in your mouth. As much as saliva production is limited when sleeping, there is enough saliva to help reduce the acidic conditions. Keep in mind that acids are dangerous for your oral health. This is because they wear down the enamel and expose the dentin.

To help your mouth do extensive repairs, it is recommended that you brush before bedtime. This helps manage bacteria and prevent its spread when sleeping. Failure to do so will cause various oral infections like tooth decay and gum disease. If you suspect that you have any of these conditions, you get in touch with us immediately. This is because leaving them untreated will cause serious oral problems. For instance, gum disease can advance to periodontitis, a condition that could cause tooth loss. Tooth decay can also advance to the tooth pulp and cause damage. Visit our offices for more information on how your mouth repairs itself.
