Examination step in general dentistry

Posted on 7/4/2022 by Advanced Dental Specialty Group
Examination step in general dentistryRegular dental examinations are necessary for monitoring your oral health. During a dental appointment or checkup, your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and surrounding regions. Dental examinations could either be specific, tied to a certain condition or structure, or be general and extensive, involving the entire cavity. General examinations are recommended regularly as a preventive measure against oral illnesses. A dental examination could take anywhere between 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the complexity of the assessment.

Examination process

The dental examination procedure begins with reviewing the patient's oral and medical history. Reviewing the dental records to aware the dentist of any past complications, medications, or changes since the last visit enables the dentist to establish a personalized treatment plan. The dentist then performs an intra and extra dental assessment, checking for carries, staining, carries, lymph nodes, or soreness using dental devices, for example, a mirror. Dentists may also use digital imaging devices like X-rays to look at the mouth cavity to check for abnormalities, bone loss, and gingival disease. MRI scans can also be used for specialized examinations to enable the dentist to create a precise treatment plan.

Sensitivity testing is also important to ensure the enamel is strong and the tooth is in great condition. Sensitivity may be tested through thermal, mechanical, or electrical stimulation. Dentists must thoroughly clean the teeth during a dental examination to dislodge tartar or plaque from teeth. A dentist will scrub and polish teeth using dental tools during a dental cleaning, leaving you with a bright smile. After cleaning your teeth, a dentist will also check the condition of any restorations you may have, alignment, or teeth grinding. At this point, the dentist will give you tips on how to care for your oral health better and schedule you for further appointments if potential risks are discovered.
