Implant Anchored Dentures

Elderly woman enjoying her new smileHave you contemplated getting regular dentures, but are not sure if they are right for you? Do you want to avoid the hassle of taking your dentures out every evening and placing them every morning? If so, then our team at Advanced Dental Specialty Group may have a solution for you. Implant-supported dentures are a great restorative option that combines the best qualities of implants and traditional dentures.

How Are Implant Supported Dentures Different Than Regular Dentures?

Regular or traditional dentures are molded to fit over the top of your gums. This may make them appear less natural than implants and can cause wear on your gums over time. This fitting process will also reduce the amount of biting strength you have, which may limit what types of foods you can enjoy.

Implant-supported dentures involve the installation of several posts into your jawbone. However, each individual tooth does not have its own post as with dental implants. Implant-supported dentures are divided into segments, with each section being attached to a different post or pair of posts. These posts are slightly larger than those used for regular implants because they bear more weight.

What Is the Procedure Like?

The procedure for implant-supported dentures is very similar to the procedure for dental implants. The first step is a consultation appointment, during which our team gathers measurements of your oral cavity and takes x-rays. The x-rays will help them determine if you need a bone graft to make your jawbone strong enough to support the implants. This information will also be used to create your dentures.

If a bone graft is needed, our team will complete this procedure and allow you several months to heal. The bone fragments must have completely fused with your existing bone before the implants can be installed. Once this occurs, our team will install the titanium posts into your jawbone. They can then install the dentures onto the posts.

If you do not need a bone graft, our team can complete the process in only two procedures. The first procedure involves the installation of the posts and the second procedure involves the placement of your dentures onto the posts. In some cases, the final set of dentures can be installed onto the posts immediately. If this cannot be achieved in your case, you will be provided a temporary set of dentures to use while your mouth heals.

How Long Do Implant Supported Dentures Last?

The titanium posts that support your dentures will last for the rest of your life. The dentures will last approximately ten years, according to Perio.org. To get the most out of your dentures, it is important that you practice good oral hygiene and schedule regular exams with our team. It is also vital that you avoid potentially damaging foods, such as hard candy, because these foods can crack and wear your dentures.

If you take good care of your implant-supported dentures, they will provide you with years of bright smiles.
